Official Postcrossing stamp from Germany

by Renae November 6, 2022

I’m pretty sure it’s been more than 10 years since I’ve posted on this blog. But I never forgot it! I always knew that someday, I’d be back. I love travel and my postcard hobby and learning about the peoples, places, and cultures of the world too much NOT to return!

What a delight, then, to mark my return with this official Postcrossing stamp from Germany, courtesy of a very kind Postcrosser who sent me this treasure while asking for nothing in return. Amazing! (I did send a little something ☺️)

First off, is the envelope, handmade from paper that talks about the Postcrossing stamp! Unbelievable! I’m already gobsmacked.

Official Postcrossing stamp from Germany—on a handmade envelope about Postcrossing!

Then, inside the envelope, I am gobsmacked further.

The backside of the postcard, with a kind note from Albrecht and an unused Postcrossing stamp from Germany!

The sender, Albrecht, actually attached an unused Postcrossing stamp to the postcard inside the envelope! Isn’t that unbelievably generous?!

The front side of the postcard has to do with Albrecht’s love of calligraphy and stationery—loves I share, as well.

Collecting and sharing postcards is a passion of mine. I’d love to parlay it into a business. Maybe I’ll start a stationery subscription box, as my favorite service, Spotlight Stationery in the UK, is closing.

Or maybe I’ll simply be a travel blogger. Making my way around the globe, helping others coming behind me to do so as well. Time will tell. And I look forward to that story!

Art in the Park, Asheville, North Carolina

Art in the Park, Asheville, North Carolina

I’m not sure where I picked up this advertising card for Asheville’s Art in the Park 2010. I really like the artsy image though, which shows Asheville landmarks. (Asheville is about 20 miles north of me.)

Miao-style House in China

by Renae November 8, 2011

Diaojiaolou in China

I received this interesting postcard as the result of a direct swap. It shows a Miao-style house, called Diaojiulou. On the back is says, “The Diaojiao House with Hills behind and River in Front.”

From the web: “The Miao-style Houses are of wood and high above ground. Each has several wood pillars as support. Therefore, it is called “Diaojiaolou” in Chinese. Homes are usually two to four storeys. Upper layer is used to store the provisions; people live in the middle; while fowls are sheltered under the house. An ethnic minority museum was built in this village where some ancient ethnic cultural relics are exhibited. Seen from a distance, the whole village looks like a mirage.” (Check it out at http://www.travelchinaguide.com/attraction/guizhou/kaili/langde.htm — some interesting photos and cultural info there!)

Since I also collect and appreciate beautiful stamps, I thought I’d also share the back of the Diaojiaolou postcard with you 🙂 Click on the image to see a closer view.

Central Park in Winter

by Renae October 17, 2011

Central Park in Winter

Love this card, and this scene, of a snowy Central Park in New York City. I imagine standing there myself, seeing this exact same view, hands stuffed in my pockets, breath showing in puffs, thinking about all the lives represented by each lit window. I also imagine walking home–perhaps my window is one of those windows?–and then enjoying a warm cup of mint tea or hot chocolate. Ahhhh…. 🙂

Loch Crinan, Scotland

Loch Crinan, Scotland

This card shows Loch Crinan from above Bellanoch Moorings. What’s interesting to me about this card is that it could almost be a photograph from here, in Western North Carolina!

Kitten from Boxville Sur La Mer

by Renae September 27, 2011

Kitten from Boxville Sur La Mer

What a very cool postcard, which arrived in a package of five that I received in a swap! I looked it up online, and discovered that the image comes from a children’s book originally published in Japan called “The Kittens of Boxville” by writer and “kitten-house architect” Ryosuke Handa and photographer Yoneo Morita from Tokyo. You can check out the cuteness on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Kittens-Boxville-Ryosuke-Handa/dp/0811866882

Map card of Bulgaria

by Renae September 27, 2011

Map card of Bulgaria

Okay — this one is strange. It’s an official Postcrossing card showing a map of Bulgaria. But it comes from someone in Uzbekistan who, at the time, was vacationing in Bulgaria! Although the map card is neat, I sure would have liked to receive a card from Uzbekistan! 🙂

Independence Square, Kiev, Ukraine

Independence Square, Kiev, Ukraine

This card must have come from a swap since it is blank on the back. But it’s one of those cards that amaze me, showing a city I’ve never given much though to, a city filled with many people just like me, living their lives, going shopping, watching TV, working, living, wishing, wanting. The world sometimes seems very big to me — like now.

St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral, St. Petersburg, Russia

by Renae September 9, 2011

St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral, St. Petersburg, Russia

This building looks spectacular — with blues and whites and golds. The Cathedral is one of the oldest in St. Petersburg and one of the last remaining examples of Baroque architecture. Inside are 10 gold-framed icons given by Catherine the Great.
