Art card – Ukiyoe, by Hokusai Katsushika

by Renae

This lovely official postcrossing card is a welcome addition to my collection–thanks to Hiromi with the beautiful handwriting! 🙂 She tells me that ukiyoe is “old Japanese art.”

Ukiyo-e is actually translated something like “Pictures of the floating world”

Pretty popular subjects for the prints were kabuki actors, geisha, erotic “shunga” prints, etc. Landscapes came a little later and certainly Hokusai was a master of those. 😉 The card is nice.
