Kansas State Penitentiary

Kansas State Penitentiary

I received this card in a swap — I think it’s kind of a strange view for a postcard. “Hey Ma! Lookie where we’re visiting today!” 🙂

South Padre Island, Texas

South Padre Island, Texas

From a swap — this card shows Isla Blanca Park, at the southernmost tip of Padre Island. “The Jetties, located at the island’s southern tip, are one of the most unique features of the county park.”

Want to subscribe by email?

Please use the link in the right sidebar instead of the link at the upper right side of the page. My developer didn’t activate the link and, although I know a little HTML, and know which code I need to replace where, there’s too much “php” stuff in the code so I’m kind of afraid to mess with it. I’ll get fixed when I can but, in the meantime, must ask email subscribers to use the link at right. Thanks!

Thinking about Iceland

Iceland by Stuck in Customs on Flickr

Just found this cool post over at National Geographic, “Ten More Reasons why Iceland is Astonishing.”

I think this one is coolest:

“Because of its patronymic naming system, the phone book in Iceland lists folks by their first name, grouped by city or town where they live.”

Could you imagine that?

By the way, I subscribe to updates from IcelandAir, as I’d really love to visit Reykjavik someday, even for an extended weekend. The airline often has fantastic deals — although not fantastic enough for five people 🙂  Anyone want to come sit with the kids for four days or so?  🙂

Also, check out this map card of Iceland I received several years ago; the post also has a link to an awesome story of someone who took advantage of an Icelandic layover!

Almost 300 postcards in the queue…

postcards

Hello to visitors new and old! Welcome to the home of the “new” Laptop Traveler!

Over the past two weekends, I scanned almost 300 postcards; the plan is to post them here over the coming months.

So please be sure to subscribe by RSS or by email using the links at the top right of the page so you can see new posts as they arrive!

And please leave a comment; it’s great to know that others enjoy the cards as much as I do 🙂

World Wildlife Fund card

World Wildlife Fund

This isn’t a postcard; it’s a blank greeting card that someone used to send me postcards in a swap. But I liked it enough to save it! Strangely, the artist’s name is nowhere to be found on the card — on the back is simply the name of the WWF.

Trails Leaving Independence by Goslin

Trails Leaving Independence by Goslin

I like art cards — this one is thought-provoking, bringing me back to a time when men and women picked up everything they had and left for a better future, heading West — toward open land and the promises of a better tomorrow.

This card shows “Trails Leaving Independence” circa 1838, by Charles Goslin. Printed from an original oil painting at the National Frontier Trails Center in Independence, Missouri
